The American Bison (American Buffalo)
American Bison, also known as the American Buffalo,
were traditionally found in the western prairies of the United States
and Canada. Now, these large mammals are currently limited to national
parks and reserves.
The
American Bison is the largest mammal found naturally in North America.
They have large heads with curving horns growing from the sides. Their
coats are brown and shaggy on their shoulders and legs, but smoother
on the remainder of their bodies. Bison stand 5-6 feet tall at their
hump, and weigh between 1300 and 2200 pounds.
Why Are American Bison Endangered?
Frontiersmen nearly eliminated the bison in the 1800’s. They would
shoot the animals for their hides, and killed mass numbers of these
herd animals. Efforts to save the American Bison began in 1893. Today
there are approximately 50,000 individual bison in North America.
